Copy Cat
Ever notice how kids will do exactly what they see another kid doing? Even though Aubree is only thirteen months old, I see it all the time with her. If Calleigh eats blueberries, Aubree wants blueberries. If Calleigh gets a drink, Aubree must have a drink. If Calleigh starts screaming and yelling, Aubree screams and yells. And on and on it goes. Thankfully it doesn't drive Calleigh crazy yet or anything because I do remember from my childhood the phrase, "Mommy, he's copying me!!" I guess it can get annoying. Anyway, the reason I mention all this is because yesterday Calleigh had to do a timeout for something or other. After it was over and she moved away from her spot against the front door, who crawls over but Aubree to apparently do a timeout as well. And that is the picture you see above. Clearly her "timeout" wasn't too much of a burden as evidenced by the grin on her face.
I'm happy to report that we seem to have turned the corner with Aubree and the adjustment to her new room. The first three nights were somewhat torturous with her waking up three - five times during the night. One of the nights I had to go in and lie next to her crib in the middle of the night and hold her hand well she fell back asleep. I'm just not used to this stuff with this kid. I thought maybe there was something else wrong (teething?) that happened coincidentally at the same time as the switch but it appears it was indeed just a tough transition. The last two nights have been much better and in fact, last night she didn't wake up at all. So happy times. The only little problem we have going is that her door is super squeaky when you open and close it. I've taken to just letting her music play all night because I'm too paranoid to open the door and turn it off when I go to bed. Obviously we need to rectify the squeaking at some point.
In other Aubree news, she's making progress in her walking and verbal skills. Today she was able to stand up for long increments by herself. At one point, it was probably a good 30 seconds. I let her go and she just stood there beaming from ear to ear (when I tried to get a picture of this late today, of course, she wouldn't cooperate). Another time she crawled over to me, got herself up by holding onto my leg, and then let go. I'm feeling hopeful that she'll be walking by Nova Scotia which is now less than four weeks away. Verbally, she's really starting to mimic sounds and it does sound like she's saying words like "Hi," "Duck," and "Fish" among others. I still haven't declared her first word (other than the Da-da and Mama that she's been doing for quite a while) until she sees an object and says it without prompting.
Wednesday this week we went a nearby church where they were having something called "Boutique for a Week" which is a kind of like a travelling consignment store. It happened to be in town this week. They had a few little booths there with people selling things they make or services they sell. A lady was doing eyebrow waxings for $5 so I said, why not? I've never even plucked a hair from my eyebrows so this was totally a new experience. Calleigh was intrigued with the process and the lady voiced her surprise that I didn't even flinch when she ripped the paper off with the hairs stuck to it. At least I'm tough when it comes to something. It only took a few minutes and now I have "new and improved" eyebrows! Not that you can really tell. Anyway, the lady also did braids for $1 so Calleigh got a neat braid done and had some glitter sprayed on it which she thought was pretty special. And this one didn't even smell like Lysol! Sorry, couldn't resist Camille :)
Yesterday Elaine did some more babysitting duty so that I could go to the dentist. Yes, I know it does seem like I'm at the dentist all the time. Feels like it to me too. This time I went because the dentist is giving me a new crown on my bad tooth. I recently got two of my veneers replaced because of problems and now it's time to fix the crown. There's been a dark edge on the top for quite some time and all the fixings weren't working. The only answer is a replacement. When they removed the old one, it's pretty freaky to feel with your tongue what's left there. It's only like a jagged half tooth and I think it's pretty dark too. Of course, the tooth, or what's left of it, is dead from the root canal many years ago so it's not like it's a useful tooth but it's weird to think about. Thank goodness for crowns! I have not been happy with my crown/veneers pretty much from day one so I'm hoping these fixes will solve it but I'm not too hopeful. My main thing about my two front teeth, besides the dark edge on the crown, is that the line where my gums and teeth meet is not even. My crown tooth seems to go up a little higher than the left one. It's very small but I notice it. I asked my dentist about it (thinking it would get fixed with the new crown) but he says that it's always been like that and would require surgery to fix. I KNOW I never noticed it before the crown/veneers so I'm very skeptical on that answer. Naturally, I've been pouring over all my pictures pre-crown/veneers to see if I can tell but it's hard to find ones that are that close up. I'm sure the dentist has one he took so I should ask to see it so I'll know once and for all. Anyway, I just have a temporary crown on now while they get the new one made so I have to go back on the 19th.
Potty time for Calleigh has been progressing to the point that she'll now go by herself, wipe, and do her hands without any assistance from me. It's still weird for me to wonder where she is when it gets quiet for a moment and then I see her sitting on the toilet in the bathroom. Sometimes she'll just go in there to go without even announcing it ahead of time. She's also pretty much going without the potty seat now too. I do get a little concerned about her falling in there but so far so good. Her big thing, though, is the self flushing loud toilets that you find at many stores. Walmart, for example, has a VERY loud self flushing toilet (it's the one in the private family restroom). We used it the other day and it flushed for like a good 60 seconds (I assume it must have had something wrong with it). Now her big concern for any public toilet is whether it has a "long flush." She asks me about that every time and is very apprehensive to use it. This morning we were at a consignment store and she said she had to go potty. Before she'll even go in she asks me if it has a long flush. I tell her that I didn't know but we could find out when we got in there. The next thing I know, she sees an employee in a room next to the bathroom, pokes her head in and says to her, "Does this toilet have a long flush?" I don't know what the response was because I had already steered her in. And she promptly refused to go. I told her it didn't even flush by itself but her mind was made up. So that meant it was another pitstop in the portable potty in the van. I had to take some toilet paper from the store bathroom with me (ran out after the first pitstop during yard sales). So Calleigh uses the potty while I buckle Aubree in. Apparently there was too much toilet paper because the next thing I know Calleigh's holding the wad up and the bottom half is hanging down into the potty where she just went. She tries to pull it up and of course, it now gets stuck to her leg because it's wet and she tries to jump up and get it off all the while yelling loudly because you know, who wants to have pee on their leg. Ahhh! Fortunately this story doesn't end with the potty tipping over but I'm guessing one of these days that is exactly what's going to happen. It's just a matter of time. Once I finally got her cleaned up, which involved me getting quite a lot of pee on my hand, I had to try and unobtrusively dispose of the urine. It's hard to be too sneaky because it's patently obvious what's in the little reservoir. I waited until no one was looking and then ran over and dumped it underneath a tree next to some flowers. I'll have to check next time I'm there to see if those flowers are flourishing. Maybe it works like cow manure.
Just an update on the whole CO2 episode. I ran into our neighbors Rossana and Robi a few days ago and asked if they heard anything more on what happened. Rossana said that the guy came over and apologized to them a few days after it happened but provided no details on how it happened. He also mentioned that his car (not sure if it was THE car) had been broken into and some things had been stolen. He was wondering if some of the neighbors were mad at him and had done it. Rossana said she didn't think so. I told her how our GPS got stolen some odd months ago. So it's a little nerve racking thinking about thieves running around here. Anyway, Rossana said that it's a couple who live there with their 3-year old child so maybe the kid got hold of the remove starter (if that's what it was) and accidentally started the car. Could be, I suppose. I do know about the mischievousness of a 3-year old.
I think that's that. Hope everyone has a wonderful Independence Day weekend. As Calleigh asked when I told her it was the birthday of the United States of America, "Are we going to sing happy birthday to it?" What I really think she meant to find out was "Are we going to have birthday cake?" We just might.
