Aubree's Surgery
My prayers were answered when the doctor's office called yesterday and told me that Aubree's surgery this morning was first on the docket. That was the part stressing me out the most about this whole thing. We had to be at the hospital at 6:30 for the surgery at 8:30 and she couldn't have any food or drink after midnight. I didn't sleep very well which is typical when you know you have to wake up early. And I did have to wake up even a little extra early to pump since I don't know when I'd be nursing her again. One thing that worked out nicely with the re-schedule is that Camille and Camden are here so we were able to just leave Calleigh here with them (Elaine would have come over otherwise but I'm glad she didn't have to get up early as it turns out...not that she would have minded).
We did the registration thing and then went to the Rapid In & Out (RIO) area where they whisked us right back to a room that had a stretcher crib in it. They took Aubree's vitals which she wasn't crazy about and then next came the thing that I wish I had known about ahead of time. They gave her a drug called Versed which basically makes you really mello and sleepy. After she had that, there was no worries about her getting hungry or anything. She was as calm as could be and in fact, started giggling a few times. If I had known they were going to give her that, I wouldn't have been so concerned about having the first appointment. At any rate, eventually the doc came in and explained exactly what he was going to do which put our minds at ease (not that we were super freaked out or anything but you know, it's your kid). He said it would take about 30 to 45 minutes. The anesthesiologist also came in and told us they were just going to give her a mask and then they would do an IV after she was already out. That made us feel better too. Finally it was time. The nurse wrapped her in a blanket and off they went. Thank goodness for the Versed because Aubree barely batted an eyelash. Nonetheless, it was pretty tough to watch her being taken away.
This is when we first checked in.
Starting to feel a little loopy after taking the Versed
We went to the waiting room to check in (they assign you a number and from then on, if they need to talk to you they announce "Number Nine, please come to the desk.") and then went and brought food back from the cafe. When they took her it was about 8:20. At 8:45, they called Number Nine to the desk and told us that the doctor wanted to see us back in RIO and that's all she knew. We were slightly alarmed because we didn't think the surgery would already be over and plus, the doc said he would come and talk to us in the waiting room. But as it turned out, the surgery was over and the doc called us back so he could show us the cyst. It was about an inch and a half long. Quite impressive looking.
After that, we went back to the waiting room where we waited for nearly another hour. We hadn't realized that we would have to wait that long while she recovered but that's the way it goes I guess. At long last they called us back to the RIO and a few minutes later they wheeled her in. It was very exciting! She was just lying there on the bed, fully awake but not making a peep. But as soon as she saw us, she got all animated. In fact, she pulled herself right up and I kid you not, gave me a big kiss on the mouth. Her mouth was wide open so it was a little awkward but it was so precious. They had left a little bottle of sugar water and Duncan gave it to her. Boy, did she drink that down. Considering she hadn't had anything to eat, it was understandable. I also nursed her a little bit. We ended up being in the RIO for about 50 minutes (by this time it was around 11:15) and then we were out of there. Aubree was acting completely normal and wasn't crying or anything so we were very happy.
That's her incision on her upper left chest.
She has just a tiny little incision that was of all thing, glued up. There are no stitches which is nice. We have to keep the area dry for 48 hours. All in all, it was a minor thing but we're glad it's over with.
There have been other thing going on. Sabbath afternoon was an interesting time. Calleigh was in her crib for her usual nap but told me that she didn't want to be in there. I told her that as long as she had a binky, she needed to be in there. I figured there was no way she would go without a binky. But she called my bluff. She said she didn't want binkies so I took the mattress out of her crib and told her okay, you can stay in your room and sleep on the mattress. Big mistake. I threatened that if she came out, I'd put her in the crib. Well, there were a few hollers to go to the potty and some other noises and I never did get to have my nap. After a good hour and a half, she hollered again and I went down there and what a sight. She was buck naked but what's more, she had taken the baby powder and basically shaken it all over the room. And there was stuff strewn all over the place too. That was a real blast to clean up. It turns out that she'd even opened drawers and poured some in there. And she had also doused the CD player which by some miracle still works because it was buried in powder. I don't think she's ready for the big girl bed quite yet.
After cleaning up the fiasco, the four of us decided on the spur of the moment to have a picnic supper at Lake Lily. I threw together some food and off we went. Despite the flies, it was enjoyable and we also enjoyed nice stroll around the lake.
Sunday morning was Magally's baby shower. I took the girls to the Kittrell's house in Altamonte Springs. It was nice because it was so close. It seems like everyone lives in Apopka or beyond so it was nice to have a short trip. The highlight by far of the shower was the pool in the backyard. Lisa's little son, Kenny, was in the pool for most of the time with his dad and Calleigh of course, was intrigued. She started off just watching but by the time all was said and done, both Calleigh and Aubree were in the pool despite having dresses on. I'm afraid we were pretty bad shower guests because we didn't even see them opening the presents. But the girls had a blast! The only downside was that when we got in the van to leave, Calleigh says to me "I have some pee in my underwear." I thought a little had dripped out or something but the next thing I know, she's standing there and pee just gushes out like a geyser all over the floor. It didn't seem to bother her in the least although I can't say the same for me. She's officially had her first accident. It was my bad because I didn't ask her if she needed to go before we left but in all honesty, I had figured she had gone in the pool. I mean, what kid doesn't pee in the pool??
The awesome cake that Fiorella Meidinger made.
That wasn't the end of pee unfortunately. We got back from Ron & Elaine's and she's standing in her crib and the next thing I know she says "I went pee pee." Sure enough, there's a big wet spot in her crib. I'm just not sure what happened there. So I had to clean that up. And then, a little bit later, I go to lie on my bed while she's going to the potty (sometimes it's a lengthy process) and as I go to lie down, I see this giant pee stain on my white duvet. Yup, someone peed on my bed. My first thought was Calleigh but I know she would have told me she had and when asked, she denied it so I'm pretty sure it was Marlee. Son of a gun.
Monday morning, we picked up Camille and Camden from the airport. They decided to spend some extra time with us before the wedding, much to our delight. In addition, Camille's sister Shelley is visiting from Tennessee (although staying elsewhere) so she's been hanging around with us. Calleigh has taken a strong liking to her. Yesterday we took it pretty easy and then this morning, they all went over to Ron & Elaine's pool while we were at the hospital. Calleigh must have jumped off the side of the pool to Shelley about 30 times, no joke. Needless to say, when we got home at about 12:45 she told me she wanted to go for her nap. She doesn't usually go down until 2 and she hadn't even had lunch. I forced some cheese down her throat (ha ha!) and then all three kids went down at the same time. That doesn't happen very often. I was happy to see Aubree fall asleep very easily and have a regular nap.
So that's that. We have a busy rest of the week with various people arriving Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Hopefully I'll have some time post.
I just want to say that God is so good. This was our first experience with a child in the hospital and I'm so grateful that all went so well. Thank you everyone for your prayers this morning.
