Once Upon A Child - No Punch, No Business

One of the advantages of having a blog is that you have a forum to vent. And now is one of those times. I had a customer service incident on Friday and although in the scheme of things it's not that big a deal, it did frustrate me. The title of this post, Once Upon a Child, is the name of a consignment store in Orlando on East Colonial Drive. It opened last year and I think I've mentioned on this blog how big it is and how I've enjoyed shopping there....well, I think that changed. Someone sent me a monetary gift for Aubree so Duncan, Calleigh, Aubree and I headed off to the store to spend it. I was on the hunt for some warm clothing to take on our trip to Nova Scotia. I found a bunch of stuff and went to the cashier where a British woman rang me up. As she was ringing me up, I found my Customer Appreciation Card for her to punch. This is a card that has 20 spots on it. Each time you spend $10, they give you a punch. When you get 20 punches, you receive 15% off your next purchase. They'll also give you an extra punch if you decide to not use a bag. So, that means that you would be spending roughly $150 to $200 at their store before you would receive the discount. On this visit, my total came to $39.94. I give her my card and she punches it three times and then an extra for not giving me a bag. I ask her if she gave me four punches for my purchase because I was so close to $40. She says "no." I said, "But I'm so close. Only six cents off." Again, she says, "no." Then I said to her, "How about I give you the six cents." She doesn't even crack a smile as she says "no." By now I'm looking at her with this incredulous look on my face like it's a joke. So I gave a little laugh and said "Wow, so you won't punch my card for six cents. I sure hope I don't tell anyone about this." Now, don't get me wrong. The punch is not that important to me but I was absolutely dumbfounded that for SIX CENTS she wouldn't give me a punch on a card in which you need TWENTY of them to get a measly 15% off. Clearly, she is not the owner of this establishment - - at least I hope not. After the fact, the irony of the situation hit me. The card is called a CUSTOMER APPRECIATION CARD. So, I didn't get my darn punch but I do have the joy of writing about that fact on this blog and here's hoping that a bunch of people read it! And I may not ever go back to the store again. So there!

Just one added comment - - there is another consignment store that I go to in Longwood called "Baby and Beyond" that prints on their receipt: "Bring this receipt in for 10% off your next purchase." There's no confusion with that one.

Tomorrow I plan on writing a regular entry here...

Bravo Corey...way to use the blog. So many companies, large and small, have no idea how a customer can perceive their action or inaction.

Hi Corey-

My name is Monica and I'm the owner of the store you mention in your most recent blog entry. The employee you mentioned informed me over the weekend of the situation as I wasn't here the day you were in.
I ask that you give me the opportunity to discuss this with you and hopefully remedy this. If you are willing, please ring me at the store today or whenever you have a moment.

Thank you-Monica

I just came across your blog while looking for reviews of Once Upon A Child. I was at this store today, helped by the same woman, and left very unimpressed. So much so that I doubt I'll return. My daughter (9yrs old) liked some of the clothing there, but if we return to buy any, I'll probably go to the Ocoee store instead.
My complaint is a little different that yours though. I entered today with a basket full of clothing (some newborn/baby from my son, but mostly ones that my daughter decided she didn't like after wearing once or twice), a travel bouncy seat and a snugli. I left with less than $3 as payment of the items they kept. I think if I hadn't been so stunned when she told me the total they were offering, then I would have said forget it & taken my items back. What pricing guide is this place using? I thought I had been told that they offer you 50% of the retail price. I don't know if this is the original retail or what they will resell it for, but either way.... They kept a 2 piece baby outfit (brand new, tags still on) a pair of girls shorts & 2 girls shirts. For $3? Seriously?

I know this isn't what you were upset about, but I'm so annoyed at the moment & needed to vent. LOL

BTW, the same woman helped me and I agree, she is very dry. They didn't take the bouncer because of a 'stain'. When I asked her to point it out, she acted annoyed and pointed out what looked like a piece of dried cereal puffs or something of that sorts. I'm sure if I wanted to I could have scraped it off with my fingers. No way will I be shopping at that location again.

Hi Corey...
What a small world...I am on the computer looking up reviews of Once Upon a Child...I have a ton of stuff I wanted to sell and was wondering if it was worth my time driving all the way to Colonial from Deland...(this is Ashley by the way...Macey and Marley's mom)...so I am not impressed so far with what I have read! Maybe I will reconsider...I certainly don't want to drive all the way there and be insulted! I have a lot of beautiful things to sell...so I think that I would be not happy if they offered me like $20. Hope you are doing well...we will probably see you this weekend!
