Potty Time
I don't know whether to get excited about the developments over the last few hours because it could just be a fluke. So I will try to temper my joy as I write this. But in the last five hours, Calleigh has peed twice and pooped three times on the potty. How did this all come about you ask? I have to give credit where credit is due...to her father. Duncan took the girls out and about after their nap today so I could stay behind to cook and clean. He didn't take any diapers with him. When they were at his parents, Calleigh's diaper was leaking and when she took it off, she said she had to go poop. Duncan said she had two choices. She could either poop on the floor which she would have to clean up and or she could go in the potty. She opted for the potty and although she didn't poop, she peed. And she was the proud recipient of a jelly bean for her efforts. She was quite delighted to give me the details when she got home. A short while later, she announced she had to poop and sure enough, she did! Through the course of the evening, it seemed like she was on the potty about every 10 minutes and things kept happening.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm very happy about all this but I can see where it could get a little tiresome for me and where there could be abuse with the system. One problem was that I had just brushed her teeth when she said she had to poop again. Indeed, she did poop and then I had to give her more jelly beans which meant that I had to brush her teeth again. So she got into bed like 15 minutes late right there. After a few minutes, she called down that she had to poop again. I sent Duncan up and sure enough, she pooped. Fortunately he talked her into waiting for the morning for her jelly beans (I had said one for pee, two beans for poop). Five minutes go by and down she calls again, "Mommy, I need to go poo poo and pee pee on the potty." What am I to do? So back up I go, take the jammies and diaper off again, put her on the pot. She says she needs a book to look at so I give her a random book. She says it's "Facebook" and she starts leafing through it. Then she says she needs the water on so I put that on. I ask her if she's done yet because nothing's happening but she proceeds to tell me "this is how I do it" as she grunts and does a few tooties (a few days ago she wanted to know what tooties were since pee was # 1 and poop was # 2. We deemed them # 3 in case you were wondering). In the end, nothing happened. She called down one more time but I didn't bite on that one. So the question is, how do you know when they really have to go and when they just want to get out of bed? And just how long do you keep up the jelly bean bit? Sure, your kid goes on the potty but he's ten pounds heavier!
Ahhh, yes, the bag of jelly beans. They've really been a big part of our lives this week. I decided I would have to take some drastic measures regarding her swimming lesson on Tuesday. We just couldn't have a repeat of the meltdown she had at the lesson before. That's when I decided I would have to bribe her. We stopped on the way to the Y to get a bag of jelly beans and I told her that each time she put her face in the water, I would put a jelly bean in her little bowl and then at the end of the lesson she could eat them. Furthermore, she couldn't cry because then they would tell me to leave the area. There was still some partial tears and she definitely was still reluctant to put her face in but she did it and she got four jelly beans. It's so funny because she can turn back to her regular self in a flash. She'll go from crying and sad next to the pool to happy and friendly a few seconds later once we're in the locker room. She went up to several of the kids in her class, bent down so she could look up into their face and asked them all "What's your middle name?" "What's your last name?" or her latest one "What's your mommy's name?" She's just as happy as can be to chit chat once the threat of face submergence is gone. Anyway, we had her last class yesterday and she did even better than Tuesday. There was no crying at all but still a lot of reluctance. But beyond that, she's really not catching on to the whole swimming thing. She kicks her legs very well but she just isn't doing the arm movements as she should and certainly not both of them together. They gave us a progress report at the end of the class and of course, it said that she needed to repeat it. I think the face thing really set her back. Also, several of the kids in the class are four so I don't know if that makes a difference or what. Regardless, I think we'll take the month off and see if we can work on things in Ron & Elaine's pool and then maybe we will sign up again in July. We'll see how it goes.
Practicing at R&E's pool. Notice the moose that fittingly "poops" jelly beans.
Yesterday we decided it was finally time to lower Aubree's mattress. Now that Aubree is pulling herself up on everything I figured it was only a matter of time before she was trying to hurl herself over the edge of the crib. Thankfully she's adjusted to the change quite nicely...not that we expected anything but from our expert sleeper.
Calleigh helping Daddy tighten the bolts on the lowered mattress.
Aubree seems to like her new digs.
In other Aubree news, I've dropped the 2 pm nursing session. We're now down to four nursings a day. Perhaps we'll be dropping another one soon (I need to review my Calleigh records to see how I did it with her) but since she's only taking around five minutes to nurse, it's really not much of a hassle to just keep it going. But it's amazing how obsessed she is with beverages. If you give Calleigh a sippy cup (aka, Nuby) or if you drink out of a cup in front of her, she gets really animated and starts trying to grab for your cup. She wants what's in there and she wants it RIGHT NOW! Of course, I'm not giving her any juice but if it's milk or water, she's welcome to it.
Today my friend Karri Green stopped by for a visit. She recently got a job in Maitland so although she lives in Tavares, she's quite a bit closer when she's at work. She was doing some training this week and had some free time so she came by for lunch. I haven't seen her since just after Aubree was born so it was so nice to see her and catch up. She brought birthday presents for the girls so that was extra nice.
David and Yully came over for supper tonight, although they brought the food with them. Only about three weeks left until the wedding and it's fun to talk about all the little details. We have to try and figure out about a wagon for Aubree. I don't know that she'll be walking by then and even if she is, it will be pretty slow and wobbly. So we're going to have her in a wagon to be pulled down We're thinking a wooden one but even a white or pink one would due. Obviously our big red and blue one just wouldn't look right so we're on the hunt for something else.
I think that's all. Enjoy the holiday weekend and have a Happy Sabbath!
