Clapping & Refrigerators

What do these two things have in common you ask?  Well, they both are associated with accomplishments that the girls each achieved today.  This morning Calleigh made the discovery that she could open the refrigelator (as she often calls it) door on her own.  I don't know if that's necessarily a good thing but it did come in handy a little later.  During breakfast I went to use the bathroom while Calleigh was drinking her smoothie.  She then hollered that she wanted her yogurt so I told her to get it herself.  She hopped down from her seat, opened the fridge, got out her yogurt, went to the drawer and got a spoon, seated herself, got the top off the yogurt, and started eating.  I was pretty excited about this show of independence but I figure it's only a matter of time now until I find her in the corner downing a giant block of cheese.

Meanwhile, Aubree started clapping today on her own.  But what got me really excited is that she is doing it based on my verbal command and not because she sees me doing it.  And she seems so pleased with herself to boot!  As far as crawling, in addition to the creeping backwards, she's now periodically lifting her belly off the floor so that she's at least in the proper position.  She's not actually moving but it's progress!

This week Aubree had her first taste of homemade macaroni & cheese.  Truthfully, I don't know which of the girls shoveled it into her mouth faster!  Clearly it's a hit but then, what kid doesn't like mac & cheese, right?  Another thing that I'm noticing about Aubree is that she seems to be much happier when there is food on her tray that she can feed herself as opposed to baby food or some other food that I spoon feed her.  Yesterday I was feeding her some baby veggies that I know she likes but as she ate each bite, she kind of let out a little cry and tried to grab the spoon out of my hand.  I knew she was hungry so I wasn't sure what the problem was.  I ended up stopping and giving her some of my pinto beans in a chili sauce and she pounced on them and gobbled them right up.  Works for me since as I've said, I'm pretty lazy.  Really, I shouldn't say lazy.  During mealtimes, I'm trying to get Calleigh her food and then feed myself so I'm usually pretty busy.

Speaking of food, I just have to mention this.  When we were at the ABC last week, I saw this Coconut Waffle Mix that was on sale so I figured I'd give it a try.  Boy, it was the best waffle I've ever had and the girls really liked it too (I gave it to Aubree plain - - no syrup).  The best part is that it's very healthy too.  The website is thevegetarianexpress.com.

This week at story time, Calleigh discovered books on CD.  You can borrow the CD's and then they have the book that you can read along with it.  I spotted a book on Amelia Bedelia and I just had to get that one.  It so reminded me when I was kid.  To this day, I still explicitly remember one of the books where someone had this scam with a $20 bill going.  Anyway, Calleigh has listened to the CD several times and it gives this little beep that sounds when it's time to turn the page.  I guess it took her awhile to understand the concept because about the first 15 times it made the beep, she would ask me each time, "Turn the page?"

Duncan was gone from Sunday night to Wednesday night at a conference up in Atlanta so that was pretty stinky for us.  But as we say, "Someone needs to bring home the bacon...err Stripple (or as Calleigh calls them, "chips.").  Sidebar here, I've told many people this but I feel like I have to say it again because for some reason it really, really tickles my funny bone.  One morning, many moons ago when I was still a working girl, I was down at the hospital cafeteria for breakfast.  There was a sign up at the grill where you place your order that said, "Sorry, we are out of Stripple."  That made me laugh and laugh.  Clearly, it has to do with the fact that "bacon" is both the singular and plural form of the word and they were following the same concept for Stripples...which is not correct.  Anywho, we kept ourselves busy during Duncan's trip so the three days did go by pretty quickly.  But we were quite excited to see him walk through the door on Wednesday evening.

This afternoon after yard sales we went over to Ron and Elaine's for lunch and so that the girls could play with the new swing set.  Yes, Grandma and Grandpa got a swing set for the backyard!  So that was very exciting.  It reminds me of the one I had as a kid, in fact.  Aubree used the swing and slide but I think she liked the teeter totter the best.  She giggled and giggled on that one.  Can you believe that I'm in a turtleneck and sweatshirt?  This doggone cold weather.

To close, here's a snippet from one of Duncan's conversations with Calleigh this evening.  This stems from Duncan listening to Calleigh sing a song.

Duncan:  "Calleigh, where did you hear that song?"
Calleigh:  "At the dealership.  Ask me why I went to the dealership."
Duncan: "Why did you go to the dealership?"
Calleigh:  "My daughter broke my car."

Where does she get these ideas from?

Have a Happy Sabbath and great weekend!  It's Duncan's birthday weekend as he'll be turning 32 on Monday.

Calleigh has been charge of feeding the dogs for the last several months.  Some days it just doesn't go that well....

It is 4:30am and the four of us girls are here in Mimi's room. She's not doing great. Your blog was a nice diversion. We enjoyed it a lot!
