It's a Boy!

Of course, this isn't exactly breaking news now that it's a couple of days old but I'll put an exclamation mark because it's still kind of mind boggling to me!  I guess I wasn't expecting it as it turns out.  Well, I shouldn't say that exactly.  I think the way it all played out is what made it more of a shock.  I'll replay the day...

Wednesday morning we woke up to kind of dreary weather but that was okay.  That didn't stop us from hauling down to Bob Evans for a birthday breakfast.  I think because it was mid-week, it was slow so we got good service which is more than I can say for some of our other experiences there.  Although, for the life of us, we can't figure out why they don't just bring out your own pot of coffee rather than one cup at a time because, inevitably, you run out and you're sitting there waiting and waiting for a refill.  Glad I don't drink the stuff!  Anyway, I could fill a whole blog with restaurant stuff since it's near and dear to my heart (from my Friendly's days).  We'll leave that for another time.  After breakfast, we made a beeline home so I could shower and figure out what to wear since I planned on going straight to my meeting at work from my doctor's appointment.  I had finally gotten around to retrieving my two giant bins of maternity clothes out of the garage and had washed them all.  They sat, and still do, in a giant pile on the side of my bed so going through them looking for something was a real pain in the neck.  Besides that, most of it is really too big since I don't have too much going on just yet.

Elaine came about 10:40 to pick up the girls and off they went.  The weather had vastly improved and their main adventure for the day was a trip to the zoo.  Meanwhile, I was off to the doctors.  The waiting room was empty and I was called back in about 5 minutes and Duncan hadn't even arrived yet.  We killed a few minutes for him to get there and then it was time to begin.  We were obviously very excited.  Now, let me just tell you here that with both Calleigh and Aubree (and I had two ultrasounds with Calleigh because she had her legs closed in the first one), the ultrasound tech (is that what they're called?) do not go straight to finding out the sex.    They spend a good half hour looking at everything else first - - the heart, spine, brain, etc.  Clearly, these things are VERY important and it's a relief that it's all okay but of course, in the back of your mind you're thinking "Just get to the good part."  I was expecting the same process this time.  So imagine my surprise that within five seconds of the ultrasound starting, Duncan yells out "It's a BOY!"  And the tech says, "Yup, it's definitely a boy."  It was a double surprise.  Somehow I really do think I was expecting a girl because I think that's just what I know.  Plus, all the old wives tales, not that you can put any stock in them whatsoever, obviously, pointed to a girl.  I had the horrible, horrible morning sickness.  The heart rate was 162.  And the Chinese calendar said girl (it had been right for both Cal and Aubree).  Anyway, the rest of the ultrasound was excellent.  Everything was perfect.  He measured just the right size (I was only slightly paranoid about this since everyone is like "You're so tiny.").  We saw him drinking the fluid which is something I had not seen before.  He was waving his arms all around and for some reason, I had the feeling that he was a happy kid.  I know that sounds weird but it just looked like it.  After the ultrasound, I went for my very brief appointment with Dr. Breit.  I did gain about six pounds since the last appointment for a total of ten now so the weight gain is definitely starting.  But Dr. Breit told me that he wished everyone handled the pregnancy as well as I did (in regards to weight gain, etc) so that made me feel good.

After that, the phone calls all started and everyone seemed very happy about the news.  It's funny too because I think everyone naturally assumes that Duncan must be on cloud nine because he's having a son.  But in reality, as Duncan says "There's nothing I would do with a son that I wouldn't do with Calleigh."  So yes, he's happy but he really, truly would have been just as happy with another daughter.  We went and grabbed a quick bite at Whole Foods and then I was off to the hospital.  My boss (the director, my old job), or former boss I should say, Danny, took a job at AHS so they were having a good-bye party.  Thus, I got to see a whole bunch of people who were there for that and it was nice not to be in a rush.  The meeting went well and I'm sure I would have lingered to visit but then there was a fire alarm and I took that as my cue to leave.

I made a stop at the Goodwill to perhaps purchase my first outfit for the baby boy but it was all overpriced.  So I went home to work instead.  I was hoping to take the afternoon off but it's audit, year end, and I had to work on a schedule for Eddie so there you go.  But that was okay.  It was still relaxing.  I then made a quick run to Publix (so MUCH easier without the girls) to pick up a few more things and spent $3.95 on like 12 things.  The cashier was marveling.  Then it was on to meet Duncan for dinner out at Hot Olives.  It's a restaurant in Winter Park and I bought a $25 gift certificate for $2 for it on restaurants.com so it was a pretty nice deal.  It was a great ambiance and the prices were higher than we would normally spend but with our gift certificate, it worked perfectly.  The food was great and of course, we eventually got to names.  Nothing much came out of the discussion except for my telling Duncan that I sure hope we can pull the trigger on something faster than we did with Aubree who wasn't named until month 8.

When we got home, Ron, Elaine, and the girls were there lighting my birthday cake.  Not that I needed a cake but Calleigh wasn't going to miss an opportunity to get some.  It was SO good to see them after being apart all day.  Calleigh and Aubree were both swiping the frosting off the cake with their fingers in a flash.  I opened my cards and then my big gift was a new printer from Duncan.  I've been wanting one pretty much since I started couponing since the printer we have now has to be hooked up to the Internet which is on our room.  The new one is wireless so it can sit downstairs.  Major plus!

We waited until we saw the girls in person to tell them the news.  So after they finished the cake, we told them.  Aubree, as expected, is completely oblivious.  Calleigh, on the other hand, not so much.  She hasn't really said much either way on things so I didn't think she would care too much either way.  But when we said it was a boy, she immediately started this whiny voice thing and started saying, "No, I wanted it to be a girl."  A few minutes later she told me "I'm going to take it back to the hospital and get a girl instead."  I told her that it was better to have a brother because we now we could get all new toys that boys like like trucks, cars, trains, etc.  That really perked her up.  And then I told her the new baby would be like baby Jesus or baby Moses.  So now she she keeps saying she's going to tickle his toes (I think she gets this from the baby Moses story where it says brother Aaron tickled his tiny toes).  She hasn't said anything negative now about it since that night so I think she's accepted it.

The girls at the zoo:

Aubree looks like she's about to kiss the side of the train which she probably did.

Thursday was back to normal with a stop at the playground and groceries at Walmart.  This morning we were out on the yard sale circuit since they weather decided to cooperate.  I obviously have a new purpose now but since the times are still a little slow, I didn't really come across any baby boy clothes.  There's still plenty of time though.  We did find a couple of new dress up clothes which Calleigh went all bug eyed over when she saw them.  Turns out one of the dresses fits Aubree and Calleigh was so cute putting it on her tonight.  Aubree was just as proud as can be once she got it on because she was now doing dress up with her big sister.  I wanted to take a picture but my camera is dead and so was Duncan's phone.  There will be many, many, many, more opportunities though to get one, I'm sure.

This afternoon we went and picked up Marlee's ashes from the vet.  When I got there the lady asked if she could help me and I said "I'm hear to pick up ashes."  And she said "Who?"  I had to repeat myself because I think she thought Ashes was the name of a dog or something.  Anyway, that was weird.  It's even weirder to think that this little box contains the remains of my dog.  We haven't opened it yet but Calleigh is quite curious as you can imagine even asking me if she could touch them.  It sure is strange trying to explain why you would burn a dog up.  I think it's kind of creepy actually.  So for the record, I definitely do not want to be cremated.  I'm still not sure what we're going to do with them whether it be burying them in Ron and Elaine's backyard next to their cat, Suzy or if we'll take them to Nova Scotia (which entails packing them in a suitcase for a plane ride.  Would that be creepy?) .

So that's that.  That's a wrap on the week or at least, the work week.  Before I sign off, one cute thing that Aubree started saying this week.  I was in the hallway and she and Calleigh were standing there.  I think Calleigh gave Aubree a doll or something and I hear Aubree say "Thank you so much."  The "so much" is something new and her tone when she says it is just so adorable.  She says it all the time now.

Have a Happy Sabbath!

I'm so so excited you are having a boy! It will be great! I'm sure you will have him named in no time - at least before the operating room! I understand about the ashes. I have Spooky on the floor beside my bed right now. I want to bury him, but where? I don't want to bury him here and then move and leave him behind - so I would do Nova Scotia in your case - but Spooky never went there. We'll both figure it out I'm sure.
