Big Girl Bed

This morning Calleigh asked me quite seriously when she would be able to get a big girl bed.  So I thought, what the heck, maybe it's time to pull the trigger on it.  It's a very simple process because her crib converts into a toddler bed by just removing the front railing.  I figured if it blows up on our faces, it's not that much trouble to put it back on.  So after supper, Duncan went up and started the process.  It turns out that we appear to be missing a small youth rail that goes on the bottom of the open side.  The bed can work without it but it helps to keep it all together so obviously we would prefer to have it.  Oddly enough, the black crib (which was Calleigh's original crib from back in 2007) is also missing the same railing.  I'm not sure if we never got it or it just doesn't come with it.  It does seem odd that both cribs would be missing it.  However, when I checked our receipt, it said it came with the "youth converter kit" so it seems like it should include the youth rail.  Tomorrow I'll call Crib For Life and straighten it out.  That reminds me, I could actually check with Allen and Tangie since they have the same type of crib.  Anywho, enough about that.  Calleigh was very excited about the conversion.  She helped Duncan with the screws and then when all was completed, she and Aubree started playing on the new bed.  I went over the rules:  She could get up to get books (not really any way to prevent that), and she could come out in the hall and let me know if she needs to go to the bathroom but she's not to come out of her room for any other reason.  As you will see in the video, she decided that now would be the time to throw away the binkies.  However, as I write this, Duncan has gone up to her room and I believe she now has a binky once again.  I was pretty sure how that would turn out in the end.  She's also come out three times and said she needed to go potty, only one of the times being the truth.  The real test, at least for me, will be seeing if she decides to come out of her room at like 2 in the morning.  She very, very rarely wakes up during the night (can't remember the last time in fact) but maybe that's just because she wakes up and goes back to sleep on her own without alerting me.  Hopefully she won't wake up and be like "Oh, I can get out easily.  Let me go and visit Mom and Dad."  One final note, when she summoned me for the third time to go potty, she also mentioned that she wanted to have a bed like mine.  I think she might have thought she was getting a real new bed, not just the railing coming off hers.  Sorry!

Daddy working on the conversion and Aubree helping out...complete with naked bum.
In other news, Monday we went to the splash playground and the moment I've been waiting for occurred.  Aubree can WALK through the fountains.  I was very happy to sit on the sidelines and just watch their fun.  And as I sat there I thought to myself how very fortunate I am that I can sit there on a Monday morning and watch my two girls play to their hearts' content.  The place was pretty empty, I'm sure because school is back in session, but it didn't matter.  They have each other.  Incidentally, from what I can tell, Aubree seems to be pretty daring when it comes to trying new things.  When we were in the playground, she trotted to the top of the slide and just started going right down without me there to supervise or catch her or anything.  I need to keep my eye on that one.

I don't know why but she just seems so grown up in the picture.
Tuesday we hit up Story Time.  It's been awhile so it was nice to be back and especially nice to see Yolanda and Emma.  Aubree immediately started chanting Emma and repeated it about a hundred times.  Apparently Emma is a fun word to say.  Oh, before we went to the library, we had to make a detour to the doctor's office so we could get our flu shots/mist.  If you are two or older, you can get the mist up the nose (which we did last year).  As I was making our appointment, I included myself and the lady asked if I wanted the shot or the mist.  I said the mist and then I had to say "Yes, I've been through child birth twice but I'll take the mist even though it's $10 more."  I do feel pretty wimpy actually.  Calleigh did amazingly well with the mist - - barely batted on eyelash so I was impressed.  Not that it hurts, but it does feel strange/slightly uncomfortable.

Duncan got home last night at a reasonable hour so we scooted over to Grandma and Grandpa's house to go for a swim and introduce Aubree to her new life jacket.  Needless to say, it didn't go well.  I think it started out on a bad note because the pool was a little chilly (it's about 82 these days).  So right from the get-go, she wasn't happy.  Then the life jacket didn't seem to work quite as Calleigh's does where she seems pretty upright.  But maybe that's because Calleigh move her arms and legs.  With Aubree, I was hoping she could just kindof float around but you definitely have to hang on to her or else she'll end up face first.  Maybe it will grow on her.

That's not a happy face.
Taking a snack break...much better.
Today Yolanda and Emma came over for some play time.  Calleigh and Emma had fun going from room to room finding toys while Aubree trotted behind them chanting "Emma."  I have such a nice time talking to Yolanda and she has really turned into a very good friend.

That's it and that's that.  Just waiting for some banana bread to get out of the oven and then we're watching the premiere of Modern Family.  Such a great show.  And yes, Calleigh is still awake up in her bed.
Aubree trying on goggles for the next swim perhaps.
