Worms, Bug Bites, & Late Nights

I was hoping to do a post last night but David and Yully came over for supper and after they left, I conked out on the couch for "just five minutes" and then the next thing I knew, it was 11:30.  So much for that.

The week started off with our trip to the worm farm over in the boondocks of Apopka.  We were there with about seven other families (I almost said "mothers" but Allen was there too) and a bunch of kids.  So who knew worms could be so interesting?  Worms have no eyes (which I knew) and did you know they have from two to five hearts?  And that they are unisex?  Glad I didn't have to explain that one to Calleigh!  But seriously, their poop and pee can be used as fertilizer.  Fascinating!  A grandmother that runs the place gave a little talk and showed some samples of worm excrement that the girls were able to touch.  At the end, the girls got their own bottles and were able to put six worms into it to take home.  After we wrapped things up there, we all went to a great park nearby and had a picnic.  It was a beautiful day.  On the way home, I did get a little chuckle.  The lady had said that worms can eat paper because it comes from trees. I decided to test them and see if they remembered this little tidbit.  I asked where paper comes from and Calleigh replies, "From the ground and the mailbox."  It took me a second to realize she was referring to the newspaper which gets delivered to our driveway.  So yeah, that's where she thinks paper comes from.  I guess I have a little work to do.

Calleigh volunteered to go up front when the lady asked but then clammed up.

Calleigh wasn't too bashful about touching the worms.

Filling their bottles with paper.

Aubree didn't mind touching the worms either.

Tuesday was a routine day at story time.  What wasn't routine was Duncan getting home from work after 11 pm.  Cerner, which is the system for electronic medical records and a bunch of other stuff, went down at the hospital causing a big problem as you can imagine.  Thankfully it wasn't anything that the hospital had done but a problem on Cerner's end.  Either way, this caused a massive amount of extra work hours for Duncan this week with many late nights at the office and conference calls in the middle of the night.  However, Duncan was on the phone starting last night at 2:50 am until the wee hours.  Fortunately it seems to be resolved as of early this morning.

Wednesday evening was Adventurers.  Of course, Duncan couldn't be there because of the above issue but thankfully Allen was happy to fill in as substitute dad and watched Calleigh.  I didn't want to hang out there with Aubree and Brady.  We went to Publix for a few things and then came and picked Calleigh up when they were done.

Thursday was another beautiful day (high's in the 70's) so we did an outing to Maitland Community Park with Jennifer and the boys.  Thank goodness Jennifer got there before I left home so that she could have me bring bug spray.  The mosquitoes are out with a vengeance right now.  The spray worked out well but when we got home, I realized I missed one crucial part....Aubree's face. Poor little Aubree is SO sensitive to bug bites.  She has at least four of them on her face and she looks a mess.  To make matters worse, she banged her face of the floor this afternoon so now she has a red mark next to her nose and a bruise on her forehead.  I'll have to get a picture!

Speaking of pictures, I have to take a moment here to say how much I'm loving the camera on my iPhone.  I don't think I'll ever use a regular camera again.  I love it.  But not only that, thanks to Apple iCloud, the pictures automatically transfer from my phone to my computer.  No sticking the memory card into the computer again which frankly, I always found to be such a pain in the behind.

Friday was stinky because it rained.  That meant the yard sales were pretty limited but I guess in a way it worked out because I needed to grocery shop too.  I did find a picnic blanket at a yard sale which I had been looking for so that made me happy.  As I mentioned earlier, David and Yully came over for supper and we had a nice visit.  We're trying to keep our Friday night meals with them going.

I excused Duncan from church this morning since he had been up for so much of the night.  I know he felt bad because it is a bit of a chore to go by myself but it was manageable.  Calleigh was so cute when I told her Daddy was going to stay home.  She got all serious and helpful and told me "It's okay if Daddy stays here.  Remember, we went by ourselves one time when he had surgery on his leg.  Besides I go to Sabbath School by myself now so it's okay."

Aunt Wanda gets in a little "Brady time."
We had a few little hiccups at church and after another incident at home this week, I came to the realization just how often we as mothers, and sometimes fathers, have to deal with cleaning up bodily fluids from our children.  I was sitting in Aubree and Brady's Sabbath School and I looked down to find that Brady's poop had leaked all over my shirt.  Miraculously it had somehow not leaked on him so he was spared (good thing because my backup was a Red Sox onsie which had seemed a little out of place for church let alone the embarrassment of being associated with a team that had some, er, problems, this year).  Then, a little bit later, I see one of Calleigh's teachers leading a contrite Calleigh into our classroom with a suspicious looking bundle of paper towels in hand.  Yup, Calleigh had peed her pants in Sabbath School.  Nice.  A few hours later Calleigh admitted to me that "I ALMOST cried in Sabbath School when I had my accident."

But those incidences couldn't beat Calleigh's fiasco on Thursday afternoon.  The girls were upstairs for naptime and I was downstairs feeding Brady.  I hear a voice yelling the words I cringe to hear "MOMMY, I HAD AN ACCIDENT."  I told her to wait because I was feeding Brady.  This I try to say in just a loud enough tone so as not to disturb Brady who is falling asleep but loud enough so that Calleigh can hear me.  After a few more minutes, Calleigh is getting really disturbed up there so I finally go up.  Calleigh is sitting there on the floor in front of her felt board with felts all around her.  I stop feeding Brady and put him down to deal with the situation.  Sure enough, Calleigh has had the worst kind of accident.  I take down her pants and it looks like I can take care of it with minimal damage.  But just as I'm about to get the undies off, the dirty part somehow hits Calleigh's foot and she freaks out from the mess hitting her and kicks her foot as if to get it off.  I'm sure you can imagine what happened when she did that.  The next thing you know, poop is spraying all over the room, landing on the felt board, the felts, and the floor.  Brady was mercifully spared somehow.  Needless to say, we no longer have a felt board and our felt collection is now missing some of the disciples and a few angels. The bigger dilemma in all this is that I'm not sure what tone to take.  Do you act all sympathetic to her (because she is contrite and keeps saying sorry) about the accident or do you take a much sterner, reprimanding tone?  I'm just not sure.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I did hear back from the doctor regarding Brady's sweat test.  It was a comedy of errors as far as actually getting the results but in the end, they told me that there was so little salt in his sweat, they couldn't even do the test.  Since a major indicator of CF is a lot of salt, the doctor says that it's very highly unlikely that he has it but we could always try to test for it again down the road if symptoms continue.  Over the last few days we think the cough has improved as far as how often he coughs but we do still hear the mucous when he does.  We don't think we hear the wheezing as often either.  We will go for our follow up appointment on Tuesday.

I think that's a wrap on the week.  Until next time, toot-a-loo!
