Elephants, Gorillas, Snakes, Oh My!

Why can't Calleigh ever look at the camera and smile??? So frustrating...

On Wednesday, Elaine got the bright idea for us to go to Downtown Disney for something different to do. Duncan had taken Calleigh there some odd weeks ago but I hadn't been there in ages. Despite the hot weather, we had a great time strolling around looking at all the souvenirs and Calleigh played with the Legos and little playground. We also ran into a little train and carousel that could each be ridden for $2 which of course, we did. Our trip culminated with Elaine treating us to lunch at the Rainforest Cafe which was a very new experience for Calleigh. Her eyes were big looking at everything especially when we were seated at a table with a giant elephant about a foot away from us. She didn't seem to mind the intrusive elephant until about five minutes after we sat down and he suddenly started making all kinds of noises and flapping his large ears. That's when she got a little scared and might have bolted until we assured her that he was "just pretend." But I think the best part of the whole experience was listening to her recount the adventure to David, Yully, and Megan when they were here tonight for supper. She was talking a mile a minute telling them about the "Elephants and gorillas and snakes and fish." And then grabbed her ears and starting twisting them all around as she explained how the "elephant was flapping his wings." Of course, we corrected her and said those were his ears. We were all laughing.

Duncan was gone from Sunday afternoon through Wednesday evening to Kansas City for a Cerner conference for work. I had do adjust Calleigh's bedtime a little later since I only have two hands and can only be in one spot at a time. I think I managed pretty well all things considered but it's a million times better having him home. And not just because of the help with the kids! Ron happened to be gone up to Atlanta at the same time so Elaine was going it alone too. We went and ate with her Monday night and then she came over Tuesday night.

Speaking of Calleigh's bedtime, is being a night owl vs. a morning person hereditary? I do believe we have a night owl on our hands. Calleigh's bedtime has slid a little bit later ever since Aubree was born. We do our best to get her in bed by 8:15 but more times than not, she's still awake until at least 9:30. She's usually just entertaining herself in her crib so it's not much trouble. Tonight she was awake in there until about 10:15. I did have to go up at 9:45 to redress her since she had done her naked thing again. I know sleep is very important for toddlers and I also know that sleep before midnight is better than sleep after it so I'm not sure if I should try to adjust this schedule at all or just go with it since she's mostly pleasant during the day. I don't think the solution is to make her nap earlier because she already has a rough time getting to sleep for that.

Aubree had a little sleeping blip the other night. She was awake off and on between 12:30 am and 2:30 am and hence, so was I. I would fall asleep for about 15 or 20 minutes only to have her wake up again and repeat the pattern. I have no idea what that was about. The only positive thing that came out of it was that she took a longer nap the next afternoon. I swear, Aubree could patent the 45 minute nap. You could almost set a clock to it on many days. I can't wait for her to start crawling so she tires herself out and sleeps longer.

Last night Duncan and Allen took Calleigh and Braelyn to Sesame Street Live at the UCF Arena. It started at 7 pm so yes, it was a little bit of a late night last night. Apparently a good time was had by all and my night owl opinion was validated a little when they got home about 9:15 and Calleigh was all wound up. She made a beeline for her toys and started running around with them like it was the middle of the day. She was QUITE upset when told it was time for bed.

This weekend we hope to get some pumpkins and carve some jack-o-lanterns. That's not to say that we feel like it is the fall here in any way shape or form. We're setting records here with the heat. It was 95 degrees here today. Yes, you heard me. It's October 9 and it's 95 degrees. I know none of my northern friends and relatives will feel sorry for us but I just try to remember how happy I'll be in February. But today it was the pits going to yard sales and having the sweat drip down my back.

In closing, here's a picture of Calleigh eating a hot dog in a bun for the first time. I've always given her a hot dog cut up into small pieces minus the bun but I finally decided to let her have a real one (anyone know if this is still a major choking hazard at this age??). She didn't want any condiments so it was very plain but she seemed to enjoy it. However, I gave her another one today and she only ate about half the bun. She took the rest of the bun and told me she was going to save it for next time as she mushed it all up into a little ball.
